ArcelorMittal Faces $828 Million Tax Bill In Kazakhstan - Report |

ALMATY, Kazakhstan -(Dow Jones)- A Kazakh subsidiary of steelmaker ArcelorMittal (MT) must pay 100 billion tenge ($828 million) in back taxes, Kazakhstan Today news agency reports Wednesday, citing a tax committee spokesman.
Baurzhan Orozgaliyev, spokesman for the tax committee of Karaganda region where Arcelor Mittal Temirtau is based, was quoted by the news agency as saying ArcelorMittal's debt was identified during a tax inspection.
ArcelorMittal appealed the tax inspection's claim in a district court but was turned down, Orozgaliyev said. Now the company is appealing the tax claim in a regional court.
The Kazakh government has been unhappy with ArcelorMittal's safety record at its Kazakh operations. The latest methane explosion in the Abaiskaya mine in January killed 30 miners.
