Australian Envoy Backs Package Proposed By WTO's Lamy

GENEVA (AFP)--Australia will support a package put forward by World Trade Organization chief Pascal Lamy aimed at finally clinching a global trade deal, Australian Trade Minister Simon Crean said Friday. "Australia will support the package presented today," Crean told journalists after a meeting of ministers at WTO headquarters. The Doha Round of trade talks was launched in the Qatari capital seven years ago with the aim of producing a pact to help poor countries enjoy the fruits of global trade. But the process has been delayed by disputes between the rich developed world and poorer developing nations, principally over subsidy and tariff levels for farm and industrial products. Lamy Friday tabled a new set of proposals in a bid to avert a collapse of week-long talks here. "No one is happy with every detail that's in the direction forward today. But there is acceptance I think, in the main, that...it's the basis for moving forward," Crean said. However the Australian minister cautioned that the package could only be accepted on a "take it or leave it" basis. "It has to be accepted in the totality, not trying to pick apart aspects of the detail," he said. "I think that's the spirit in which people wanted to proceed. Today was a very significant advance," Crean added. Australia is a founding member of the 19-strong "Cairns Group" of top agriculture exporters, along with Argentina, Brazil, New Zealand, Pakistan and South Africa. -Dow Jones Newswires, 201-938-5500 Click here to go to Dow Jones NewsPlus, a web front page of today's most important business and market news, analysis and commentary: http://www.djnewsplus.com/al?rnd=momliFUbkLkO9OuIQJjF%2Bw%3D%3D.
