Brazil's Petrobras, Union Continue Talks To End Strike
Wednesday July 16th, 2008 / 23h52
RIO DE JANEIRO -(Dow Jones)- Brazilian state-run energy giant Petroleo Brasileiro (PBR), or Petrobras, and the union representing striking platform workers continued to hold talks late Wednesday aimed at ending the walkout, a spokeswoman for the Sindipetro-NF union told Dow Jones Newswires. The company and union officials started the meeting at 1700 GMT. Workers on oil platforms in the key Campos Basin started a five-day walkout Monday, seeking a change to the way Petrobras accounts for shore leave. Workers want "disembark day," or the day they disembark from the platforms for shore leave, to be counted as a work day because they typically are on-call until late in the day. Petrobras currently counts "disembark day" as a day of leave. The Campos Basin, off the coast of Rio de Janeiro state, is Brazil's largest oil-producing region. The area is responsible for more than 80% of domestic oil output, reaching daily production of 1.559 million barrels of oil equivalent, or BOE, in June. Petrobras also faces a work slowdown Thursday at refineries, distribution terminals and other facilities sponsored by the Brazilian Oil Workers Federation, or FUP. FUP leaders said they will seek to disrupt shift changes and other operations, but will not attempt to stop production. The slowdown will be made as a show of support for platform workers, as well as an effort to pressure Petrobras to raise its latest profit-sharing proposal to workers. The slowdown is scheduled to start at 0300 GMT Thursday. FUP, an umbrella union representing workers at Petrobras operational facilities, has also threatened a nationwide strike that would cut production at all Petrobras units, should the company not negotiate in good faith. -By Jeff Fick, Dow Jones Newswires; 55-21-2586-6085; Jeff.Fick@dowjones.com Click here to go to Dow Jones NewsPlus, a web front page of today's most important business and market news, analysis and commentary: http://www.djnewsplus.com/al?rnd=tbcz0xXX1Jauzo6mglEnJg%3D%3D.
