Court: Monolithic Power Didn't Violate Deal With Linear Tech
Wednesday July 2nd, 2008 / 23h18
DOW JONES NEWSWIRES A federal court ruled that chip maker Monolithic Power Systems (MPWR) did not breach a 2005 agreement with Linear Technology Corp. (LLTC), and Monolithic said it plans to seek substantial attorneys fees and costs from Linear. Monolithic's shares jumped 8.3% to $25.06 in after-hours trading. There was no after-hours trading of Linear's stock, which closed Wednesday at $32.06, down 1.8%. The U.S. District Court in Delaware also found that Monolithic had not willfully or indirectly infringed on Linear patent claims. Linear makes integrated circuits. However, a jury said an evaluation board made by Monolithic containing a discontinued product had directly infringed Linear's patent claims, and that Linear's patents are valid. Both companies had agreed that damages would total $10 if Linear prevailed in that dispute. In October 2005, Monolithic settled a patent litigation suit filed by Linear for an undisclosed amount. The settlement involved both companies jointly filing a motion to terminate the International Trade Commission's investigation into the matter. The patent-infringement claims involved Monolithic's backlight inverter integrated circuits, which are part of its LCD backlight inverter product family. -By Kathy Shwiff, Dow Jones Newswires; 201-938-5975; Kathy.Shwiff@dowjones.com Click here to go to Dow Jones NewsPlus, a web front page of today's most important business and market news, analysis and commentary: http://www.djnewsplus.com/al?rnd=LW9whl%2BCMpgGy0CJvqg%2FuA%3D%3D.
