DOW JONES NEWSWIRES Eli Lilly & Co. (LLY) said it "strongly disagrees" with statements made by Connecticut Attorney General Richard Blumenthal Tuesday regarding the company's marketing of antipsychotic drug Zyprexa. Blumenthal announced Tuesday he was joining nine other states in suing the Indianapolis drug maker over the medication. According to a press release from the Connecticut Attorney General's office, the state is suing Eli Lilly for illegally marketing Zyprexa for unapproved uses and concealing the drug's side affects. The state's release said, "Eli Lilly allegedly corrupted physicians, pharmacies and administrators at nursing homes and youth detention centers as part of a massive illegal marketing campaign to promote Zyprexa for unapproved off-label uses, including for the treatment of children." Zyprexa isn't approved for patients under 18 years of age. In a statement Wednesday, Eli Lilly countered, "The news release contained no acknowledgment of the seriousness of schizophrenia or bipolar disorder, no reference to the importance of treatment stability, and provided no guidance to patients who may now have questions about their treatment." The state's suit seeks to recover more than $190 million that the state's medical assistance program spent on the drug over more than a decade.
