Greeks See 9-Day Protests As Popular Uprising - Poll

ATHENS (AFP)--Most Greeks believe that violent protests by youths, triggered by the police killing of a teenager, are a "popular uprising" and not driven by "minority activists," a poll published Sunday showed.
Six out of 10 Greeks said the unrest, now in its ninth day, is a "mass phenomenon," according to the survey of 520 adults conducted by Public Issue pollsters.
The poll was conducted Thursday and Friday, the two quietest nights of the protests.
Sixty-nine percent thought Prime Minister Costas Karamanlis' conservative government has failed to respond adequately to the crisis, with 76% of those questioned "dissatisfied" with the police response.
Forty-one percent thought no-one among Greek political leaders had properly addressed the crisis, with just 205 approving of Karamanlis' handling.
Widespread violence reignited Saturday night after vigils were held marking one week since 15-year-old Alexis Grigoropoulos was killed by a police bullet.
