RAMALLAH, West Bank (AFP)--Palestinian prime minister Salam Fayyad Monday slammed Israel's bloody operation in Gaza as "an aggression without precedent since 1967" when the Jewish state occupied Palestinian land. "Despite the announcement of the withdrawal of the Israeli army, we remain in a danger zone," Fayyad told reporters in the West Bank political capital Ramallah. "We are in an extremely dangerous situation," he said. "The Israeli aggression is without precedent since 1967 and has even surpassed what happened then." Palestinian president Mahmud Abbas Sunday severed all contacts with Israel in a blow to renewed peace talks. Israeli troops withdrew from Gaza Monday after an explosion of violence that left 116 Palestinians dead, including 22 children, since Wednesday. Two soldiers and an Israeli civilian were also killed. Israel captured the West Bank and the Gaza Strip, along with east Jerusalem, Golan Heights and the Sinai during the Six-Day War in 1967. |
