Peru's Finance Ministry Forecasts Inflation Drop From Nov

LIMA -(Dow Jones)- Peru's Finance Ministry on Tuesday forecast a steady decline in the country's inflation rate due to declines in prices for commodities, such as food and fuel. Speaking at the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation finance ministers' summit in the northern city of Trujillo, deputy Finance Minister Eduardo Moron said that inflationary pressures should be minimal in November and decline steadily afterward. "We expect that there will be a downward trend (in inflation) in the coming months, more in line with what people were expecting," Moron was quoted as saying by state news agency Andina. "But this process is not going to be instantaneous." The consumer price index for Lima, used by the Central Reserve Bank of Peru to set monetary policy, increased 0.61% in October, well above expectations. The central bank aims to keep inflation in a range from 1.0% to 3.0%. Central bank President Julio Velarde said recently that the inflation rate is expected to end this year between 5.5% and 5.6%. Rising food and fuel costs earlier this year contributed to inflation concerns, and the higher prices caused significant drops in President Alan Garcia's approval ratings, pollsters said. -By Leslie Josephs, Dow Jones Newswires; 511-211-2689; peru@dowjones.com
