Somali Region Lets Radio Station Resume Operations - Watchdog

MOGADISHU, Somalia (AFP)--Authorities in Somalia's breakaway region of Puntland Wednesday allowed a radio station to resume broadcasting, three days after it was yanked off the air, a watchdog said. Paris-based Reporters Without Border said privately owned Radio Galkayo resumed operations and its detained director, Hassan Mohamed Jama, was released but ordered to report to a Galkayo court Thursday. The station was ordered off air Sunday after it carried a news item claiming that Puntland President Musse Adde, who visited Galkayo township that day, was collecting arms from government stores. The radio station reported that Adde plans to use arms to defend himself after he rigs elections slated for Dec. 30, a police official told AFP on condition of anonymity. Puntland, situated in northeastern Somalia, declared itself autonomous in August 1998.
