Taliban Militants Execute 2 'Prostitutes' In Pakistan -Police

PESHAWAR, Pakistan (AFP)--Taliban militants shot dead two women in the troubled northwestern Pakistan city of Peshawar after accusing them of being prostitutes, police said Wednesday. The hard-liners crushed the face of one of the women, apparently using rifle butts and stones, and left a note warning that others engaged in "immoral" activities would meet the same fate, the police said. Pakistani militants trying to emulate Afghanistan's 1996-2001 Taliban regime have been attempting to impose a harsh version of Islamic law in the area and have bombed music shops and hair salons in the past. Police said Wednesday that the bodies of the two women, one in her 20s and the other in her 40s, had been sent for autopsies. Police official Pir Dil Khan said the bodies were found Wednesday in the Naguman suburb of Peshawar, a conservative city near the Afghan border. The city has experienced a rising threat from Islamists. "The women appeared to be from middle-class families and the relatives of one woman have identified her," Khan said. The note left with the bodies was signed by the Jaish-i-Islami militant group, which is active in the tribal district of Bajaur bordering Afghanistan and is part of Pakistan's umbrella organization of Taliban groups. Pakistan security forces launched a major operation against militants in another tribal region adjoining Peshawar in June after saying that the rebels could take over the city.
