MAKHACHKALA, Russia (AFP)--Two members of the special forces were killed on Monday in a clash in Russia's restive Caucasus republic of Dagestan, an official said. "Unknown individuals opened fire on members of the special forces of the Dagestan police and the soldiers who were on patrol," a spokesman for the Dagestan interior ministry told AFP. "Two men from the special police forces were killed in the exchange of fire that followed." The clash took place in the town of Karabudakhent, around 30 kilometers (20 miles) south of the Dagestani capital Makhachkala and just inland from the Caspian Sea. Three other members of the special forces were wounded, the Interfax and Ria Novosti news agencies reported. This information wasn't confirmed by the interior ministry. Rebel attacks on police and other pro-government forces occur frequently in Dagestan, a mainly Muslim region of Russia's north Caucasus that neighbors war-torn Chechnya.
