(Adds details from CEO Bezos about e-book sales starting in second paragraph and stock price.) By Ben Charny Of DOW JONES NEWSWIRES CARLSBAD, Calif. -(Dow Jones)- Amazon.com (AMZN) Chief Executive Officer Jeff Bezos said Wednesday that Amazon's e-book reader, the Kindle, led to sales of about 8,000 e-books. He said of the 125,000 books available in both the Kindle and in print formats, the electronic version of the book represents more than 6% of overall sales. But Bezos did not disclose how many of the $359 Kindle book readers Amazon has sold so far. It's believes to be a relatively small number. "It can be a meaningful financial component, but a lot of things have to go right," Bezos said. The Kindle-related e-book sales Bezos disclosed Wednesday at the All Things D Conference here suggests that while there's an audience for electronic books, it is so far a nominal one. The Kindle, which has struggled to find an audience, is one of the first hardware devices that the online retailer has made itself. It seeks to revive an industry that while promising has failed to deliver much profits. Amazon introduced the Kindle in November. It has yet to disclose how many have been sold. Amazon recently cut the price of the device to $359. Amazon shares recently traded down $1.48, or 1.8%, to $79.13. -By Ben Charny, Dow Jones Newswires; 415-765-8230; ben.charny@dowjones.com |
