US Finds Lack Of Evidence To Open A Dumping Probe Of Vietnam

WASHINGTON -(Dow Jones)- The U.S. government said Friday it found insufficient evidence for a product dumping investigation of Vietnam. Commerce Department officials announced a final review of clothing import data turned up nothing. A monitoring program began upon Vietnam's entry into the World Trade Organization in January 2007. Commerce examined import data for five different apparel product groups from Vietnam - trousers, shirts, underwear, swim wear, and sweaters - during the third six-month period, February through July 2008. "This final investigation reveals that prices of Vietnamese apparel are in line with, and in most cases even exceed, other major suppliers, including Central America," U.S. Assistant Secretary for Import Administration David Spooner said. Dumping occurs when a foreign producer sells a product in the U.S. at a price that is less than fair value, which is often the producer's sales price in the country of origin or its cost of production. -By Jeff Bater, Dow Jones Newswires; 202 862 9249; jeff.bater@dowjones.com Click here to go to Dow Jones NewsPlus, a web front page of today's most important business and market news, analysis and commentary: http://www.djnewsplus.com/al?rnd=%2FyQit1qi1GWz7Y2iwr8Vcw%3D%3D.
