US President Hopeful Obama, Ex-President Clinton Ease Tension With Talk

WASHINGTON (AFP)--White House hopeful Barack Obama held a long-awaited telephone chat with former president Bill Clinton on Monday, which Obama's camp said was "terrific." The call came days after Obama and his vanquished party foe Hillary Clinton appeared together in symbolic surroundings of Unity, N.H., hoping to repair party fractures left by their prolonged tussle. "Sen. Obama had a terrific conversation with President Clinton and is honored to have his support in this campaign," Obama spokesman Bill Burton said in a statement. "He has always believed that Bill Clinton is one of this nation's great leaders and most brilliant minds, and looks forward to seeing him on the campaign trail and receiving his counsel in the months to come," Burton said. Reports last week said that despite his wife's vow to do whatever she could to make Obama the next president, two-term president Clinton was still nursing anger over the race, in which he was accused of playing the race card. The former president remains a hero to many grassroots Democrats, and could possibly help Obama in his quest to win over working class whites in key swing states that backed Hillary Clinton in the primary race. -Dow Jones Newswires; 201-938-5500 Click here to go to Dow Jones NewsPlus, a web front page of today's most important business and market news, analysis and commentary: http://www.djnewsplus.com/al?rnd=3lGBWWahUFfXD%2FiXfjAf1g%3D%3D.
