White House Has 'Serious Concerns' On Sen Product Safety Bill
Monday March 3rd, 2008 / 23h49
WASHINGTON -(Dow Jones)- The White House said it has "serious concerns" with a Senate bill to reform the Consumer Product Safety Commission. In a Statement of Administration Policy, the Office of Management and Budget said the measure would put a burden on consumers and businesses. The White House, which backs a House-passed measure on product safety, stopped short of threatening to veto the Senate bill. OMB said it is "strongly opposed" to provisions that appear to give state attorneys general the authority to interpret CPSC standards, saying that could lead to a "confusing patchwork" of regulations. Another provision opposed by the White House would create a public database of consumer safety incidents. The administration says that kind of database would trigger junk lawsuits and put an unneeded burden on the CPSC. -By Henry J. Pulizzi, Dow Jones Newswires; 202-862-9256; henry.pulizzi@dowjones.com
