Australian Council Hands Down Pilbara Rail Recommendation

CANBERRA -(Dow Jones)- Australia's National Competition Council Friday handed down its recommendation to Treasurer Wayne Swan on whether rail infrastructure in the Pilbara should be thrown open to third parties. NCC's final recommendation is confidential, but a draft recommendation issued in June found Fortescue Metals Group Ltd. (FMG.AU) should be given access to Rio Tinto Ltd.'s (RTP) Hamersley and Robe River rail lines and BHP Billiton Ltd.'s (BHP.AU) Goldsworthy line. Swan now has 60 days to rule on the matter, or it will be deemed he has decided not to declare the railways open. Rio Tinto and BHP Billiton vigorously opposed the draft recommendation, saying it would put at risk billions of dollars in future investment. -By Rachel Pannett, Dow Jones Newswires; 61-2-6208-0901; rachel.pannett@dowjones.com Click here to go to Dow Jones NewsPlus, a web front page of today's most important business and market news, analysis and commentary: http://www.djnewsplus.com/al?rnd=zqA%2BjI6lIzdxa%2FbHsvt05w%3D%3D.
