Sanofi-Aventis Stops All Clinical Trials On Rimonabant
Wednesday November 5th, 2008 / 16h47
PARIS -(Dow Jones)- Sanofi-Aventis (SNY) Wednesday said it will discontinue all ongoing clinical trials with rimonabant, the generic name for anti-obesity drug Acomplia. "The decision has been taken in light of recent demands by certain national health authorities," the company said. Last month, the European drug regulator said it is recommending the suspension of the controversial anti-obesity treatment Acomplia across the European Union because the drug's benefits no longer outweigh its risks. This decision was taken after the European Medicines Agency found there is an approximate doubling of the risk of psychiatric disorders in obese or overweight patients taking Acomplia compared with those taking placebo. "This announcement does not change the company's guidance for 2008," Sanofi added in a statement. Last month, Sanofi said charges related to the suspension of anti-obesity drug Acomplia in the E.U. will be less than EUR50 million net of tax in fiscal 2008. Sanofi said it will inform healthcare professionals of the suspension of clinical trials as of today, and people currently enrolled in these trials should consult their clinical investigator to discuss their treatment.
