DOW JONES NEWSWIRES Zambia's copper mines are continuing to receive a steady fuel supply despite the shortage in the country due to increased demand and inadequate supplies from the country's sole refinery, a senior industry official told Dow Jones Newswires Monday. Fredrick Bantubonse, the director of the Chamber of Mines, said copper mines are receiving steady fuel supplies from contracted oil marketing companies the Indeni refinery with the result that mining operations remain steady. "BP Zambia Ltd., has been sourcing for more fuel from alternative sources to supply mines," he said. BP is the leading supplier of fuel to copper mines. Last week, the Zambian government banned BP from procuring petroleum products produced by the country's Indeni Petroleum refinery over an outstanding debt of 426.1 billion Zambian kwacha ($127.49 million), this disrupted diesel supply to the copper mines Friday, but, Bantubonse said, the situation has since been brought under control. Copper mines also continue to get fuel supplies from other suppliers like Total SA and Engen who are importing more fuel. Zambia is facing a fuel shortage on the Copper Belt and Lusaka provinces following a prolonged closure of Indeni refinery and increased fuel consumption led by copper mines who continue to resort to fuel-fired generators to meet output targets as result of power shortages. -By Nicholas Bariyo, Dow Jones Newswires; +256 75 262 4615; bariyonic@yahoo.co.uk Click here to go to Dow Jones NewsPlus, a web front page of today's most important business and market news, analysis and commentary: http://www.djnewsplus.com/al?rnd=fFMoDIEOZrOUt1ST8vlzMg%3D%3D.
