The cancellations were caused by a staff meeting to protest hiring procedures ahead of the airline's relaunch next month after being taken over by Italian investors.
International flights to Paris, Frankfurt, Tunis and Prague were affected and a number of passengers whose flights weren't canceled also suffered severe delays in retrieving their luggage.
Earlier this month investor group Italian Air Company, or CAI, formally took over Alitalia in a long-awaited deal.
At the time, the airline had a total debt of around EUR3.2 billion and was losing about EUR3 million a day.
The new Alitalia is expected to cede a stake of between 20% and 25% to a foreign partner - either Air France-KLM (AKH) or Deutsche Lufthansa AG (LHA.XE)of Germany - to be selected by the end of the year.
CAI is taking over Alitalia's passenger operations, which it is merging with Air One SpA, Italy's No. 2 airline.
It is to retain 12,500 Alitalia workers while cutting about 3,250 jobs.
