An Apple spokesman said Chief Executive Steve Jobs won't be attending the 2009 conference. Philip Schiller, Apple's senior vice president of worldwide product marketing, will deliver the company's last keynote address at the San Francisco expo on Jan. 6.
The pullout highlights the careful use of marketing dollars amid the global economic downturn. In addition, analysts have said that the upcoming Macworld Expo is likely to disappoint investors and devotees watching for the introduction of a netbook computer or other new product.
In after-hours trading, Apple shares were down 5.5% at $90.15.
Apple said trade shows have become a "very minor part" of how it reaches its customers as it expands its retail presence and draws more traffic to its Web site. Apple has been scaling back on trade shows in recent years, including NAB, Macworld New York, Macworld Tokyo and Apple Expo in Paris.
