Chrysler CEO Asks Workers To Lobby For Government Aid
By Sharon Terlep Of DOW JONES NEWSWIRES DETROIT -(Dow Jones)- Chrysler LLC Chief Executive Bob Nardelli on Thursday warned that the Senate may not pass a $14 billion rescue for the U.S. auto industry and urged employees to lobby lawmakers on behalf of the auto maker.
"It is still unclear at this point whether there are the necessary 60 votes in the Senate required for the bill's passage," Nardelli wrote in an email to workers. "With the Senate vote coming soon, it's especially important to contact your representative there, and make sure they continue to hear your voice loud and clear on this critical issue."
Chrysler has said it will run out of money by the end of the year without government aid. General Motors Corp. (GM) made a similar request. Ford Motor Co. (F) believes it can survive 2009, but is asking for access to funding should conditions deteriorate further.
The fate of the auto rescue bill, approved Wednesday by the House, remains uncertain amid strong opposition in the Senate.
