"There's really a risk" that "everyone supports their own industry," provoking protectionist measures, Barroso said on French radio station RTL.
Barroso also said he regrets China's decision to cancel a recent summit with the European Union, which was apparently due to French President Nicolas Sarkozy's plans to meet with the Dalai Lama.
Noting that China is "ultra-sensitive" on the issue of Tibet, Barroso said he hoped both sides would have the "wisdom" to "move beyond this problem."
