Patients taking Arpida's iclaprim had lower cure rates than patients taking the rival drug Zyvox, generically known as linezolid, according to documents posted on the Food and Drug Administration's Web site Tuesday.
Arpida, a Swiss biotech company, wants the FDA to approve iclaprim to treat complex skin diseases caused by powerful bacteria that are largely immune to antibiotics already on the market.
A panel of outside medical experts will discuss iclaprim at an FDA meeting Thursday. The panel may recommend approval for the drug, but the FDA doesn't have to follow the panel's advice.
