"It is essential that Europe continues to demonstrate its leadership and that a close Franco-German relationship gives its weight and its capacity for initiative," said Bernard de Montferrand in a column to appear Friday in the financial daily Handelsblatt.
The French ambassador released a version of his text in French late Thursday.
"That is what is needed for a return of confidence" in the economy, he said. "We will win or we will lose together."
Concerning recent French proposals for a European economic government, which brought objections from several E.U. member states starting with Germany, de Montferrand said that it was a question of getting past the "misunderstandings" that don't reflect the reality.
It is the idea of "economic government which worries so much our German friends," he said. "It is better not to use this expression but progress in the coordination of our economic policies and our financial decisions."
