Grenade Attacks Kill Five In Southern Somalia - Officials
The attack took place in Beledhawo, a town on the borders of Somalia, Kenya and Ethiopia.
"Two hand grenades were hurled into the local authority offices, killing five people and wounding six others," local official Mohamed Abdi Farey told AFP by phone from the town.
Suleiman Ahmed, another local official, said the raid occurred when commanders loyal to Barre Shirre Hirale, a former warlord who ruled over the southern Somali port of Kismayo, were meeting with local officials.
"We don't know who was behind the attack," Ahmed said.
Hirale's forces were ousted from Kismayo in August by an alliance of Islamist Shebab fighters and forces loyal to Hassan al-Turki, a hardline Islamist warlord listed as a terrorist.
The shattered country has been wracked by violence since the 1991 ousting of former president Mohamed Siad Barre led to a bloody power struggle that has defied numerous bids to restore stability.
