Security officials say the hotel is the last area in Mumbai where gunmen remain holed up, 54 hours after they launched coordinated attacks in India's economic capital that have left at least 155 people dead.
An AFP reporter at the scene said the shooting and blasts came from inside the building shortly after 4:00 a.m. Saturday (2230 GMT Friday), shattering several hours of relative calm.
Military sources had earlier said the commandos were fighting as many as three heavily armed militants inside the hotel.
National Security Guard chief J.K. Dutt had also said he hoped the operation to clear the building would be completed before dawn.
