The Director-General for Press and Public Relations for Japan's Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Kazuo Kodama, said in a briefing to reporters that talks for the free-trade deal are expected to start when Peru's President Alan Garcia visits Japan early next year.
Peru has recently reached a free-trade agreement with China. The Andean nation also has pacts with the U.S. and Canada, and has initiated talks to lower trade barriers with the European Union and others.
Japan's Prime Minister Taro Aso is currently in Lima for the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation summit.
Peru's government said Saturday that Japan and Peru have signed a bilateral accord to promote and protect investors.
