The plant, located in the municipality of Cota, near Colombia's capital, is Hino's first assembly plant in Latin America, the ministry added in a press release.
The plant will produce 400 to 500 trucks per month for Colombia and other Latin American markets, the ministry added.
Luis Guillermo Plata, Colombia's trade minister, said Japanese investors are returning to Colombia, attracted by improved security conditions and legal stability.
Colombia is expected to lure $10.26 billion in foreign direct investment in 2008, up from $9.04 billion registered in 2007.
