The National Retail Federation said its survey of consumer spending showed U.S. shoppers spent 7.2% more over Black Friday weekend, compared to last year, with the total amount spent reaching an estimated $41 billion.
The survey showed that better than 172 million shoppers visited stores and Web sites over the Black Friday weekend - the weekend following the Thanksgiving holiday, which traditionally kicks off the Christmas retail season.
Tracy Mullin, the president and CEO of the National Retail Federation, said "Pent-up demand on electronics and clothing, plus unparalleled bargains on this season's hottest items, helped drive shopping all weekend." However, Mullin added "Holiday sales are not expected to continue at this brisk pace, but it is encouraging that Americans seem excited to go shopping again."
The NRF continues to project that holiday sales will rise 2.2% this year to $470.4 billion.
