Lavrov met on Thursday with Ecuadorian President Rafael Correa and Foreign Minister Maria Isabel Salvador.
Lavrov is the first Russian foreign minister to visit Ecuador.
"Ecuador is becoming one of the most important commercial partners in the region together with Argentina, Venezuela and Brazil," Lavrov said at a press conference.
Russia and Ecuador will start negotiations on a trade agreement in 2009, he said.
Lavrov said that Russian companies are interested "in working with their Ecuadorian partners in many areas, such as petroleum, gas and energy, including nuclear energy, and in other areas."
Salvador said that Ecuador is interested in obtaining financing for oil, electricity and road projects, among others.
