A company spokeswoman said that Mattia, who managed about 200 financial advisors in the firm's Fifth Avenue, N.Y. office, left Merrill Monday, but declined further comment.
Investment News reported Mattia's departure earlier Tuesday. Merrill Lynch hasn't named a replacement, the spokeswoman said.
Mattia worked at Merrill Lynch for more than 17 years, according to financial industry regulatory authority records.
In September, Merrill agreed to be acquired by Bank of America Corp. (BAC) for $50 billion. The deal is expected to close by the end of the year.
