The Cabinet said in a statement it will give a NT$30,000 subsidy to consumers who purchase the cars next year and cancel registrations on their old cars.
"The stability of the car industry plays an important part in ensuring employment and economic growth," the Ministry of Finance said in a statement.
"As the car industry has contracted for three consecutive years due to the economic slowdown and other influences, we hope this initiative can spur domestic demand and boost the domestic economy."
The Cabinet will send the proposal to the legislature for approval by the end of 2008 so that it can be implemented next year, said an official from the Government Information Office who declined to be named.
