WASHINGTON (AFP)--U.S. President-elect Barack Obama and President George W. Bush had "good, constructive, relaxed and friendly" talks at the White House on Monday, according to Bush spokeswoman Dana Perino.
The two leaders "had a long meeting, described by the president as 'good, constructive, relaxed and friendly,'" she said after the two leaders held an hour-long meeting six days after Obama's historic election victory.
"They spoke about both domestic and international issues, though since it was a private meeting the White House will decline to comment on specifics," she told reporters in a statement.
Obama's spokeswoman said the president-elect welcomed Bush's commitment to ensuring a "smooth" transition of power.
"President-elect Obama thanked President Bush for his commitment to a smooth transition and for his and First Lady Laura Bush's gracious hospitality in welcoming the Obamas to the White House," said transition spokeswoman Stephanie Cutter.
The hour-long talks in the Oval Office were "productive and friendly," Cutter said in a statement,
Perino said Bush also showed Obama the living quarters at the White House, including the office the president uses, the famed Lincoln Bedroom, and the rooms for Obama's two young daughters, Malia and Sasha.
"The president enjoyed his visit with the president-elect, and he again pledged a smooth transition to the next administration," which takes office on Jan. 20, 2009, the spokeswoman said.
