JOHANNESBURG -(Dow Jones)- South Africa's largest trade union Wednesday said more than 45,000 workers across Gold Fields Ltd.'s (GFI) operations in the country could go on strike to protest against the company's method of recruitment assessment.
The National Union of Mineworkers, which said it has received a certificate allowing members to embark on a strike, is demanding the system be scrapped. The Johannesburg-based company hasn't received a strike notice, a spokesman said.
"The method has been implemented unilaterally and it has seen many people falling to get employment or reappointed at Gold Fields," said Keneth Bhuda, NUM Mining House coordinator. Bhuda said Gold Fields' so-called functional work capacity method is a barrier to the employment of new recruits and employees returning from annual or maternity leave.
Gold Fields spokesman Julian Gwillim said the company is committed to finding a workable solution that will satisfy both sides.
"We are confident that a process of dialogue should be able to resolve this issue," he said.
