ROME (AFP)--An Italian national was among around 100 people killed in the attacks on hotels and other targets in the Indian financial capital Mumbai, the Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs said Thursday.
"...our diplomatic and consular authorities have been able to confirm the death of a compatriot in the attacks in Mumbai," said a ministry statement, adding that the victim had been named as Antonio de Lorenzo.
Italian Foreign Minister Franco Frattini, meanwhile, told Italy's Canale 5 television network that all Italians who were in hotels or other areas attacked in Mumbai have been contacted "except for one or two people."
"Some are locked up in their hotel rooms and the situation that they are describing outside is obviously frightening."
He said the attacks confirmed "that terrorism represents the number one threat.
"We are extremely worried by the fact that an organization has targeted and hit hotels with tourists and even parliamentarians," he said.
A European Parliament delegation was caught up in the attacks late Wednesday targeting luxury hotels and the main Chhatrapati Shivaji railway station.
