UPDATE: Ousted Mauritanian PM Charged Over Bankrupt Airline
NOUAKCHOTT, Mauritania (AFP)--Ousted Mauritanian prime minister Yahya Ould Ahmed Waghf has been charged with bringing about the bankruptcy of the national airline, a judicial source said Friday.
Ould Ahmed Waghf, who had been under house arrest for three months, was also charged over the alleged purchase of outdated foodstuffs with his accord under an emergency program between 2007 and 2008, the source said.
A total of five people were charged and ordered detained by a judge late Thursday in connection with Air Mauritanie, the source said.
They included businessman Abdallahi Ould Moctar, who chaired Air Mauritanie's board between 2002 and 2006, while Ould Ahmed Wagf headed the airline from 2002 to 2006.
Another former director of the company and another businessman are also sought under international arrest warrants, the source said. Five more people were released without charge.
Ould Ahmed Waghf was ousted along with his government and Mauritania's first democratically elected president, Sidi Ould Cheikh Abdallahi, in a military coup on Aug. 6.
