MADRID (AFP)--Spain has recalled its ambassador to Honduras for consultations on the coup in which the army ousted President Manuel Zelaya and expelled him from the country, a Foreign Ministry statement said Wednesday.
The government has decided to recall their ambassador as part of international efforts "to restore the constitutional democratic order," the statement added.
Spain has been pressing European Union states to recall their ambassadors from Honduras after Sunday's ousting of Zelaya, as a number of Latin American countries have already done.
Spanish Foreign Minister Miguel Angel Moratinos described the nomination of Roberto Micheletti as interim leader as a "farce," in a radio interview Tuesday.
The U.N. Tuesday also backed Zelaya after he was ousted following a confrontation over his bid to rewrite the constitution so he could run for a second term.
Zelaya, who was expected to hold meetings in the U.S. Wednesday, has said that he intends to return to Honduras.
"If he comes back, he will be arrested," said Micheletti in an interview with the Spanish newspaper El Pais published Wednesday.
"He is facing charges. He has exceeded the constitution and called an illegal referendum. He has not respected a decision by an administrative court which ordered him to not to call the referendum, [which was] illegal from the point of view of the constitution."
He added that he strongly believed that the referendum was a ploy in order that Zelaya could "hold on to power."
