Dingell, 82, recently lost a high-profile battle to retain his chairmanship of the powerful Energy and Commerce Committee to a fellow congressional giant, Rep. Henry Waxman, D-Calif.
After leading Democrats on the committee for nearly three decades, Dingell last week lost a secret-ballot vote in the caucus against Waxman for the chairmanship.
