WASHINGTON -(Dow Jones)- The U.S. Treasury Department on Tuesday said three former terrorist supporters no longer "present a significant threat of supporting terrorism" and removed them from its sanctions list.
Patricia Rosa Vinck, Barakaat International and Barakaat International Foundation were also removed from the United Nations lists of individuals and entities that are sanctioned.
The announcement came via Treasury's Office of Foreign Assets Control, or OFAC.
"We are reviewing the evidentiary records for hundreds of listings - advocating for continued preventative sanctions against those who pose a significant threat of supporting terrorism and removal of those who do not," OFAC Director Adam Szubin said in a Treasury statement.
Vinck was once secretary of the Global Relief Foundation's Belgium office. Her husband was head of the office. The U.S. and U.N. sanctioned GRF in October 2002 for its support to al-Qaida.
Treasury said the U.S. and U.N. sanctions against Vinck and the two entities assisted the "global effort to prevent them from routing funds to al Qaida and other terrorist groups."
While the two organizations are no longer operating, other entities and individuals related to the Barakaat conglomerate are still remain on the U.S. and U.N.'s sanctions lists.
