The airport will be able to handle 3 million passengers a year by 2012, said a report on the government's Web site.
The capacity is expected to be raised to 7 million passengers a year by 2030, when the airport is slated to be completely finished.
Some believe Phu Quoc, 45 kilometers off southwestern Vietnam, has the potential to become one of Southeast Asia's premier high-end beach holiday destinations.
Several luxurious hotels and resort projects are under construction on the island.
